A Tribute to Rod Carew

Join the National Marrow Donor Program on September 18, 2008, as we recognize Hall of Fame baseball legend Rod Carew for his contribution to our life-saving work.

Carew’s daughter Michelle was diagnosed with leukemia in September 1995. Her survival depended on an unrelated bone marrow transplant, but a donor match was never found. Sadly, Michelle lost her courageous battle in 1996.

Throughout his daughter’s illness and after her death, Rod Carew helped raise awareness of the need for minority marrow and cord blood donors.

Rod’s passionate public plea resulted in more than 70,000 responses to the NMDP and he inspired thousands to join the Registry. Today, more than 10 years later, donors still mention that they joined the Registry in honor of Rod Carew.

Rod’s impact on the NMDP is clear: The awareness that he has raised about bone marrow transplantation and the need for minority donors helped build a broad foundation of support among the public and businesses across the country that is still saving lives today.

This inaugural fundraising event will highlight and advance the life-saving work of the NMDP and will launch an award in honor of Rod Carew. Proceeds will help the NMDP:

  • Expand the Registry
  • Fund critical research
  • Increase patient assistance funds
