Changing Transplant Centers

Some patients decide to change from one National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) transplant center to another. If you decide to change to another transplant center, it is best to do so early in the donor search process. Changing later may cause delays. A new transplant center may need to re-test you and any potential donors.

Before you change transplant centers:

  1. Make sure your health care plan covers the new transplant center. Check on this before you make the transfer.
  2. Call the new transplant center. Make sure that the new transplant center will accept you as a patient. All transplant centers have guidelines that define which patients they will accept. Some of these guidelines can be found in the Match Level section of each transplant center listing.
  3. Find out whether you need to make an appointment. Some transplant centers will want you to come in for an appointment before accepting you as a patient.

The transplant centers listed on this Web site perform transplants using unrelated donors or cord blood units from the NMDP Registry.

You can learn more about these transplant centers as well as other centers that do transplants using cells from a related donor or cells collected from the patient (autologous transplants) in the BMT InfoNet Transplant Center Directory: http://www.bmtinfonet.org/centers.

BMT InfoNet (Blood & Marrow Transplant Information Network) is a nonprofit organization that provides information and emotional support to transplant patients and their families.
